Pembangunan Manusia Seutuhnya dalam Perspektif Ensiklik Sollicitudo Rei Socialis: Relevansi dan Tantangan Kontekstual di Indonesia

Abstract

This article conceptually examines the concept of integral human development as articulated in Pope John Paul II’s 1987 encyclical, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis. It assesses its relevance to contemporary development challenges in Indonesia. The study focuses on ethical principles such as human dignity, solidarity, subsidiarity, and social justice, and explores their potential integration into national development policies. The challenges analyzed include socio-economic inequality, the crisis of spirituality and development ethics, and the marginalization of transcendent values in public governance. This research employs a library study method with a hermeneutical approach to the theology of development. The encyclical Sollicitudo Rei Socialis serves as the primary text interpreted theologically, while Catholic Church documents, social theology literature, and other academic sources are utilized as secondary references. The findings indicate that the principles of the encyclical bear profound relevance to the values of Pancasila and to the ideals of holistic national development. The integration of spiritual and social dimensions into public policy is considered a crucial requirement for building a more humane, inclusive, and dignified society. Thus, the encyclical can serve as an ethical and theological source of inspiration in shaping a paradigm of integral human development in Indonesia.
