Abstract

The ideals of realizing a developed and civilized nation are determined through dialectical cooperation between democratic leaders and critical citizens (people). Democratic leaders uphold the principle of truth as the main principle that builds democracy. Unfortunately, democratically elected leaders, instead of appearing as enforcers of truth, actually act as demagogues who are skilled at stirring up people’s emotions and provoking public reason in order to advance their personal interests. This article attempts to elaborate the struggle between democracy and demagogue leaders. As the antithesis of democracy, demagogues appear as “the extinguishers of the fire of truth”. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The data source in research is the written words or sentences sourced from books, research results, journal articles, newspapers, magazines and also other online sources. Based on the research results, it was found that, in the history of the demagogic politics, efforts to strengthen democracy are an absolute requirement. To restore the spirit of democracy, the citizens must come forward to counter the demagogue leaders by training and instilling a spirit of critical thinking and awareness, resisting fictional narratives with the truth, giving praise to the real democratic leaders, and fighting self-ignorance.
